Raising Awareness About Sexual Abuse

Facts and Statistics

Providing facts about sexual abuse is one of the ways to raise awareness about sexual abuse. Awareness of the facts is one of several preventive measures that can be taken to assist you in making better decisions to keep you and someone you know safe.

The facts and statistics provided are selections from studies and provide factual information based on the research team's findings. The information is not intended to diminish the possibility of risk to you or someone you know. The facts and statistics presented are divided into several categories.

  Laws in Your State

Note: Most rules, regulations and ordinances regarding issues of child abuse are NOT Federal, but are handled at the local level. This makes an understanding of the various different State by State laws an imperative.

Here's an excellent tool from the RAINN organization, the nation's largest anti-sexual violence non profit. NAASCA is a big fan of RAINN, which was described recently as "One of "America's 100 Best Charities" by Worth magazine.

Just click on the MAP of your state. And dont' miss the additional helpful links at the bottom of the page.

Laws can vary significantly by state. Check your state to see the laws regarding:
  • Mandatory Reporting: When — and how — you're required to contact the authorities.
  • Confidentiality Laws: Are conversations between victims and counselors kept confidential?
  • HIV/AIDS Testing of Sexual Offenders: When testing is allowed — or required.
  • Statutes of Limitations: Is it too late to prosecute a crime committed years ago?

The National Strategy
for Child Exploitation
Prevention & Interdiction

A REPORT TO CONGRESS
AUGUST 2010
.
Download the DOJ REPORT
(pdf file)
There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.”
- Nelson Mandela

Given the current statistics surrounding child pornography, we are living in a country that is losing its soul.”
- Judge John Adams, Ohio

The sexual abuse and exploitation of children rob the victims of their childhood, irrevocably interfering with their emotional and psychological development. Ensuring that all children come of age without being disturbed by sexual trauma or exploitation is more than a criminal justice issue, it is a societal issue. Despite efforts to date, the threat of child sexual exploitation remains very real, whether it takes place in the home, on the street, over the Internet, or in a foreign land.

Because the sexual abuse and exploitation of children strikes at the very foundation of our society, it will take our entire society to combat this affront to the public welfare. Therefore, this National Strategy lays out a comprehensive response to protect the right of children to be free from sexual abuse and to protect society from the cost imposed by this crime.

Dear Parent:
Our children are our Nation's most valuable asset. They represent the bright future of our country and hold our hopes for a better Nation. Our children are also the most vulnerable members of society. Protecting our children against the fear of crime and from becoming victims of crime must be a national priority.

24/ 7 you can give a TIP by dialing 866-347-2423 or by simply filling out the new ONLINE FORM

Many people don't know that a big part of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement service (ICE) mission is to stop the trafficking of human beings, including many children. Many are held against their will. Victims are frequently forced into prostitution and other illegal activities to "pay off their debt" to these smugglers.

Last year, nearly 172,500 people reported tips to ICE HSI by calling (866) DHS-2-ICE (866-347-2423), which is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. ICE introduced a new feature to its "Tip Line" in late 2011, an ONLINE FORM where individuals can logged onto ice.gov/tips to report suspicious criminal activity.
